OpenService, Inc. & MAZU Networks Team to Provide Unified Threat Management Solution for IBM Development Labs


Marlborough, MA. - February 16, 2007 - OpenService, Inc., a leader in Enterprise Event Management (EEM) solutions, and Mazu Networks the leading provider of Network Behavior Analysis (NBA) systems, announced today, that they have collaborated to pilot a multi-vendor UTM system for security threat and compliance management in one of IBM's largest product development labs. Both companies are members of Blade.org, a collaborative organization and developer community focused on accelerating the expansion of blade solutions and the IBM and Intel blade ecosystem.

"IBM was looking for a solution to manage security compliance across a network of development labs involving 10's of thousands of servers in multiple locations," said Ted Joseph, CEO, OpenService. "The solution had to meet IBM's internal security standards, while reducing the labor required to maintain compliance. Several companies were pulled together to provide a UTM solution pilot. OpenService Security Management Center (SMC) was used to provide the overall threat management and compliance reporting, a central component of the solution."

IBM needed to detect new hosts coming on the network and quickly perform a vulnerability scan to identify any potential threats. Through Mazu, IBM gains continuous global visibility into how users, applications, hosts and devices are behaving on their network, and the information on how current activity differs from typical behavior. By continually updating a moving profile of typical network behavior to reflect changing business conditions, Mazu allows IBM to analyze network behavior from many dimensions. This unique combination of behavioral profiling with real-time monitoring and historical logging provides IBM with the data to diagnose urgent incidents, resolve repeating problems, identify trends for effective planning and conduct forensic analysis. Mazu's two-way integration with the market's leading vulnerability management solutions enables the timely and accurate delivery of alerts to the OpenService Security Management Center.

OpenService provides real-time, risk-based event correlation and reporting for the UTM solution. The alert sent by Mazu is processed by the OpenService correlation engine and a vulnerability scan is initiated on the new host by issuing a command to the vulnerability management system. The result of the scan is used in conjunction with the OpenService Vulnerability-Signature Metabase to assess any risk caused by the new host. The power of the OpenService correlation engine coupled with behavioral profiling by Mazu and vulnerability assessment data from a leading vulnerability management system is just one example of the value provided by the multi-vendor UTM solution at IBM.
